The history of MOD-TRONIC
The history of MOD-TRONIC
  • Mod-Tronic Instruments is a distributor, modification center and light manufacturer of temperature sensors, heaters, controls and instrumentation for precise sensing, control and monitoring of your process or machinery.
  • Established in September 1972 by Dick and Deanna Ruple in Brampton, ON.
  • Dick and Deanna had both previously worked for API Instruments, a manufacturer of analogue instruments based in Chesterland, OH. They set up and managed a light manufacturing and modification center for API in Oshawa, ON in 1967.
  • A few years later API was acquired by LFE Corp and moved the Canadian division to Malton, ON. LFE made several changes to operations that Dick was not in agreement with, so at Deanna's suggestion, Mod-Tronic Instruments Limited, a manufacturers rep firm, was launched in their basement on September 1, 1972.
  • While at API Dick learned who the reputable, high-quality sensor and instrument manufacturers in the USA were. He approached the best of them and started representing their products in Canada. It soon became apparent that the border between the manufacturers in the USA and the customers in Canada was a challenge due to freight, brokerage, duty, taxes and exchange rate costs. In response, Mod-Tronic also began stocking and distributing products in the early 1980s. Over time, distribution took over as the primary business model for the company.
  • After working for 46 years in the business Dick retired at the age of 82 on Aug 31, 2018. At the time of his retirement the company he co-founded had grown over 6000%.
  • Dick passed away peacefully at his home on Oct 31, 2023. Deanna is still working part-time in accounting.
  • Their son Steven joined the comapny in 1988. He took over as President in 1993 and acquired ownership of the company in 1999.
  • Their daughter Vicki joined the company in 2005 and manages the customer service and purchasing departments.
  • Mod-Tronic celebrated 50 years in business on Aug 31, 2022. The picture on this page is of the founders Dick and Deanna, and was taken at the company's 50th anniversary celebration.
