NASA-Qualified Custom Flexible Spaceflight Heaters

Custom All-Polyimide Heaters with Flexible Lead Encapsulation

Minco’s low-outgassing flexible heater construction supports thermal control of spacecraft instruments, electronics and structures. The all-polyimide (AP) heater is engineered to the required shape, size and electrical performance, with a flexible lead termination designed to improve strain relief and conformability on curved surfaces.

Custom engineered and built to order: these heaters do not have a standard catalogue model or preassigned part number. A part number is assigned after the heater has been engineered to your requirements.

  • NASA S-311-P-841-compliant construction with custom flexible lead encapsulation per the manufacturer’s revision to section 3.4.1.5.
  • Low-outgassing materials for vacuum and spaceflight applications.
  • Custom geometry, resistance, wattage, voltage, lead configuration and mounting.

Select H-TBA in the model table below and click Add to Cart. Open the RFQ Cart and outline your heater requirements in the RFQ form’s message box: size/shape, operating temperature, supply voltage, wattage, mounting, leads/connectors, qualification requirements and quantity.

H-TBA is a quotation placeholder only. The actual Minco part number will be assigned after your heater has been engineered to your requirements. You may also contact Mod-Tronic for design assistance.

H-TBACustom-built spaceflight heater — RFQ placeholder. Enter your requirements in the RFQ message box. Final part number assigned after engineering.
Material:

All-polyimide flexible heater construction, Minco Type AP.

Overall Thickness:

0.005-0.010 in (0.13-0.25 mm), typical.

Power:

Datasheet power density: up to 120 W/in²; 40 W/in² with aluminium backing and PSA; 20 W/in² with PSA only. Rating depends on construction and mounting.

Resistance tolerance:

±10% standard; ±5% or ±2% available on request.

Connection:

Low-outgassing flexible epoxy lead encapsulation per the manufacturer’s revision to NASA S-311-P-841 section 3.4.1.5.

Mounting:

Space-rated pressure-sensitive adhesive, mechanical clamping or bonded installation, as specified for the application.

Dimensions:

Custom sizes, shapes, zones and cutouts engineered to customer requirements.

Temperature Range:

-115 to 220°C (-175 to 428°F). Mounting method affects the allowable range; final limits are confirmed for the engineered design.

Supply voltage:

5-120 V, depending on heater size and resistance. Confirm the required voltage during engineering.

Leadwires:

Kapton-insulated, Teflon-insulated or custom cable options, as defined for the customer-specific design.

Environmental:

Designed for low outgassing per ASTM E595. Total Mass Loss (TML) <1.0%; Collected Volatile Condensable Material (CVCM) <0.1%.

Agency Approvals:

NASA S-311-P-841-compliant construction. The datasheet reports Group A Quality Conformance Inspection and Group B Qualification Testing. Confirm design-specific documentation requirements.

How to Request a Custom Heater

Send Mod-Tronic your available mounting envelope or drawing, surface shape and curvature, required temperature range, available voltage, target heat output or warm-up requirement, and expected operating environment.

  • Specify available area, cutouts, zones, attachment method and heat-sink or substrate details.
  • Identify resistance and tolerance requirements, lead length and insulation, connector or termination needs, and any sensor or control requirements.
  • State vacuum/outgassing limits, NASA S-311-P-841 documentation, inspection/testing and traceability requirements.
  • Include anticipated prototype and production quantities, target schedule and any drawings.

Part numbers are assigned after engineering review and definition of the customer-specific heater. There is no standard model number to select or configure on this page. Final ratings, construction and qualification documentation are confirmed for the agreed design.

Flexible Lead Encapsulation

The proprietary flexible lead encapsulation replaces a conventional rigid hardened-epoxy lead exit. It is intended to improve strain relief and retain conformability through handling and thermal cycling while reducing the risk of cracking or delamination.

Qualification

The supplied datasheet reports NASA S-311-P-841 Group A Quality Conformance Inspection and Group B Qualification Testing for the described construction. These include electrical, thermal-shock, low-temperature, lead-pull and life tests as applicable. Confirm the required construction, test programme and documentation for the customer-specific design.
